I don’t know about you, but I find all this yarn weighting incredibly confuddling.

So I put together this short little guide to explain it all – there is also an incredibly useful page here from the Craft Yarn Council.

But i thought I would have a crack at trying to explain the mystery myself.  I have compiled the following information using a range of sources and the weblinks for those sources can be found at the bottom of the post.

0 – Lace Weight

Also known as light fingering, thread or cobweb and it ranges from 1 to 3 ply.

Recommended needle size is: 1.5mm to 2.25mm (US 000 to 1)

Recommended crochet hook size is: Steel 1.6mm to 1.4mm (US Steel 6, 7, 8 Regular hook)

Laceweight yarn is often worked on larger size needles that specified about to create a open, lacy texture.

An example of lace weight yarn would be Rowan Kidsilk Haze.

1 – Super Fine

Also known as fingering, sock, baby weight or 4 ply.

Recommended needle size is: 2.25mm to 3.25mm (US 1 to 3)

Recommended crochet hook size is: 2.25mm to 3.5mm (US B-1 to E-4)

Crystal Palace Yarns Mini mochi would be an example of Super Fine yarn:

2 – Fine

Fine weight yarn is also known as sport weight, baby weight or 5 ply.

Recommended needle size is: 3.25mm to 3.75mm (US 3 to 5)

Recommended crochet hook size is: 3.5mm to 4.5mm (US E-4 to 7)

An example would be Knit Picks Shine Sport:

3 – Light

Also known as double knit (DK) or light worsted, and is an 8 ply yarn.

Recommended needle size is: 3.75mm to 4.5mm (US 5 to 7)

Recommended crochet hook size is: 4.5mm to 5.5mm (US 7 to I-9)

An example would be Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK:

4 – Medium

Medium weight yarn includes Worsted, Aran and Afghan weight yarn and is 10 ply.

Recommended needle size is: 4.5mm to 5.5mm (US 7 to 9)

Recommended crochet hook size is: 5.5mm to 6.5mm (US I-9 to K10 1/2)

5 – Bulky

A bulky weight yarn is a Chunky, Rug or Craft Yarn and is 12 ply.

Recommended needle size is: 5.5mm to 8mm (US 9 to 11)

Recommended crochet hook size is: 6.5mm to 9mm (US K-10 1/2 to M-13)

Cascade Yarn Eco + is an example of Bulky weight yarn:

6 – Super Bulky

Known as Bulky or Roving

Recommended needle size is: 8mm + (US 11 +)

Recommended crochet hook size is: 9mm + (US m-13 +)
